Student loans and releasing my transcript, help!?
OK, so here’s the story.
About five years ago, I decided to attend a local college. At the time, I was in a bad situation (I had just had my daughter at a very young age, the "man" I was with was abusive, etc.) and due to not having a sitter for my daughter, I had to drop out after less than a semester. I received no credit from the college.
Fast forward to two years ago. All of the loans and grants that I had received (several thousand dollars worth) were in default, and I was being contacted daily by the Department of Education’s collection agency. I went into a loan rehabilitation program and now, I only owe about 500 dollars, and have paid off over 4 thousand dollars.
The bad mark on my credit was erased (I checked my report), and I received a letter saying that I was eligible for any and all student aid just as before and that I am in good standing. I decided to register at a different (better) college to take online courses this fall. The problem is (continued)
I mentioned on my application to this new school that I had attended the old school. I received a letter stating that in order to finish processing my application, I would have to get an official transcript from the old school. I went online, downloaded the form and sent in a check to the old school.
I received a phone call from the school I had previously attended stating that they would not release my transcript because I had an outstanding debt to them, and I have to pay it off.
Again, the loan is currently in good standing, and my understanding was that I could re-enroll in a college and the payments for that would be stopped while I was in school (deferrment, I believe it’s called?) and I could attend school. However, these people will not release my transcript and I don’t know what to do.
Is there any way out of this? I will pay the money back, but as the economy is and with two children, I don’t exactly have 500 dollars right this minute. Any help is appreciated!
Also, I should add that on the new schools website, it states that "Students who wish to enroll in Extended Campus should submit the Application for Admission, the application fee, and have official transcripts sent directly from each college and university where previous credit was earned". Since no credit was earned here, would I be required to send a transcript? I only attended for roughly a month and received no credit.
I can pay the money back on the payment schedule. The purpose of "student loans" is for those who can’t afford college.
I really don’t appreciate your smart ass answer which didn’t at all answer my question. Reported for non answering of question.
No, I DO NOT have two outstanding debts. The loan was for the school. The amount they quotes was almost 500 dollars, the exact same amount that I am repaying to the US Department of Education. There are not two debts. I got loans to pay my tuition. I am paying the loan back. I’m not confused at all. THERE IS ONE LOAN.
